How the tides of globalisation turned against the West - Part Two
John Darwin After Tamerlane: the rise and fall of global empires 1400-2000 helps the curious reader understand how the tides of globalisation have turned against the West since 2000. Most Western leaders have not noticed this tidal shift beneath the surface of the daily news. But perceptive readers can learn from this history book to live well now.
In part one of this series “How the tides of globalisation have turned against the West,” I explained how an illusion of history contributes to our sense of panic amidst crises and disturbing world events. We fear with reason “World War Three” is being set upon us. We fear “Western civilization” or the “democratic world” is under threat.
This illusion of history springs from how the intelligentsia in the West interpreted globalisation after 1991. The tide of globalisation has turned now against the West. It is time for the West to change its mind about its history.
