The psychology of power is enigmatic and poisonous, and infects more than the ruthless and the mercenary. Principled men and women of medicine succumb, even at moments of apparent triumph, when the whole society kneels in submission before their authority, in the hope of a cure, or still miraculously, a vaccine for a new disease. Submission, however, transmits the infection of power. It inspires in the most compassionate medicine men and women the excessive belief in their remedy.
