A touch of genius, Nina Simone to end on.nibliked your mention of craft. My brother is a very capable man with "intelligent hands". He was only a toddler when he tried to fix my mum's mantle clock, and of course failed, but at 7, he fixed mum's washing in achinpne, and as a teen, he was in to motorbikes and cars. He became a plumber and heating engineer, and eventually formed a company with 8 of his ol former apprentice mates. They all had different trades and taught eachother. Eventually they found a niche, working on old churches, farmhouses, and building other buildings to blend into estates, and doing lots of restoration work for the National Trust. Their work was traditional and high end. Such is the lack of good craftsmen, the "lads" did well financially. They too seldom broke their self imposed 8 hour day.
