I was so impressed by this chat I joined Samantha Rose Hill's Substack. Jeff and Samantha Rose were both on top form. I had great Saturday afternoon listening.
I have been following Samantha Rose Hill's Substack guided reading of The Human Condition. Unfortunately I did not keep pace with the reading so was not able to engage with her discussions. I hope to do better with Origins.
Jeff, I just subscribed to your site and thoroughly enjoyed this conversation with Samantha. My engagement with Arendt has been sketchy over the years. I had a few of her books in my personal library but never gave them enough time. A former professor of mine conducted a number of NEH Summer Seminars for Secondary Teachers covering Arendt's work. She tried to talk me into applying to one but I never did to my regret. I was California public high school teacher for 32 years before retiring in 2018. In the early 1980's, I was a political science graduate student at San Diego State University but never finished the program (I was married with two young sons and was financially neglectful, so I jumped on to the teaching horse and left much of that behind.).
While I did not serve in government, I was a teacher's union rep and site negotiator for a number of years and in grad school was involved briefly with a student DSA group. I had some experience with what you were speaking of. Of course there are all kinds of politics taking place in schools as well.
Great discussion. Good introduction to your work and I look forward to diving into your archive.
