Having listened to the podcast, I was awed by Isaiah Berlin's political wisdom. I loved your concluding comments too. It really is so obvious that what is lacking in modern politics, especially in my country, the UK, is exactly the points that Isaiah Berlin is making. We certainly saw " counterfeit science" here in the Covid epidemic, and many here were damaged. Our system here is broken, hence the low turnout for the elections. Do you still have compulsory voting in Australia? It seems the only solution to our problems, and maybe some form of PR. We certainly need politicians avoid "avoidable harm".

I think we need to rebuild some ordinary virtues in our institutions and culture. Not just rely on elections.

We do still have compulsory voting, but we also have preferential voting and proportional representation. The current Australian governing party received about a third of the vote, just like Labor in Britain in recent election, but obtained a bare or even minority government. There is a large proportion of 20-33% voters who are disaffected from major parties. No parties or leaders really have any solutions. We are all just muddling through with not much enthusiasm.

Here in the UK the main parties are very influenced by the WEF and are funded by banks and the wealthy elite, much to many's annoyance. We have a record high of taxation and Starmer is no different to Sunak, who was a fool and had no people skills. Politics are at an all time low here , and people are angry. Thise that voted Starmer are beginning to realise already that we have a "welcome to the new boss, same as the old boss" situation. It's the shortest PM honeymoon in my life. I want PR and more to vote. I'm not sure about forcing folk, but maybe it will be an improvement on Starmer getting only 38%of the vote and yet getting a huge majority. He's all for digital banking and IDS, which I'm not.

I'm a great fan of Isaiah Berlin, and have several of his books so this week's reading and next week's will be a treat. I am really getting my money's worth for my subscription, and having so much fun and pleasure. I'm so glad I joined.
